youth (not) wasted on the young: an interview worth reading.

Maybe it’s because we’re raising two daughters. Or it’s because I am often struck by how sophisticated some of the young women I read about (and encounter in my daily life) are today. But I am drawn to knowing more about these individuals and what makes them tick. In a way, it’s sort of the reverse theory of learning from our elders about life, love, and just about everything else.

date night: augustines.

When Tim and I first started dating, we loved seeing live music together. He’s a huge fan of all kinds of bands. And despite the “Don’t blame me, I voted for Richard Buckner” sticker on his truck, his musical taste is, admittedly, wide-ranging. Our very first date was at this dark hole of a bar, Augenblick, where we went for Irish music, and then afterwards drove around the city just listening to stuff on the radio. The pub is no longer there, and now it seems like there’s a whole lot of Katy Perry and Frozen music sing-a-longs happening in the car thanks to our girls. But we still share music as much as we can.

coffee, please.

If I need a change of pace from my bedroom or the kitchen table when I’m writing, I like to head to a coffee shop. And let me tell you, I’ve been spending a lot of time in coffee shops this long winter. Sometimes, I’ll steal an hour in one after I drop the kids off at school. Or I’ll try to meet up with a friend. Lately, even at night, a coffeehouse seems like a better choice than the usual spots to go for a drink. Maybe it’s the buzz of conversation, the comforting smells, or the food (made by other people I might add). But aside from going on a run, spending time in a coffee shop is probably one of the nicest and cheapest forms of therapy in my book.
